What Aesthetic Ultrasound Is

Ultrasound uses sound waves to show, on a screen and in real time, what is under the skin. A small handheld probe is placed on the skin with a little gel. It does not use radiation. In aesthetics, it shows the layers of the face, the blood vessels and any filler that is already in place.

What Ultrasound Is Used For at Injection Lab

  • To see the anatomy: the position of blood vessels and the layers of the area before a treatment.
  • To locate product: filler placed in a previous treatment, including filler placed elsewhere.
  • To guide certain procedures: the needle and the area are seen on the screen during the procedure.

Ultrasound-Guided Filler Dissolving

Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. With ultrasound, the filler is located first, and the enzyme is then placed where the filler is. Only hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved this way. Other products, such as Radiesse, are not dissolved with hyaluronidase.

Ultrasound Guidance for Filler

When it is appropriate, ultrasound is used as part of a dermal filler treatment: to look at the area before the filler is placed and to check where existing filler sits.

Ultrasound-Guided Joint Injections

Ultrasound is also used to guide PRP joint injections and knee gel injections. The joint and the needle are seen on the screen during the injection.

Who Aesthetic Ultrasound Is For

  • Patients who have filler from a previous treatment and want to know where it is before adding more.
  • Patients who want filler dissolved or corrected, including filler placed elsewhere.
  • Patients planning filler who prefer an ultrasound-guided approach.

Who Aesthetic Ultrasound Is Not For

  • Patients looking for a medical ultrasound study of a health condition. Injection Lab uses ultrasound only as a guide for its own treatments, and no report is issued.
  • For filler dissolving: patients with a known allergy to hyaluronidase, or with an active skin infection in the area. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are reviewed before treatment.

Ultrasound is a guide. It adds information to the procedure, and it does not replace clinical judgment.

What to Expect at the Visit

  1. Medical history and the history of previous filler treatments are reviewed.
  2. Gel is applied and the probe is moved over the area, with the image shown on the screen.
  3. What is seen is explained to the patient.
  4. If a procedure was planned, such as dissolving filler, it is done with the ultrasound as a guide.
