What a Biostimulator Is

A biostimulator is an injectable treatment that prompts the skin to produce its own collagen. Radiesse is made of calcium hydroxylapatite, a mineral-based material suspended in a gel. It can be used in two ways: for deeper structural support and contour, or diluted and spread across an area for collagen restoration and firmer skin.

Areas Treated with Radiesse

  • Face and full face balancing & harmonization.
  • Neck.
  • Chest (décolletage).
  • Knees.
  • Glutes (liquid BBL) and body.

Who Radiesse Is For

Radiesse is for adults with loose, thin or crepey skin, or with loss of support in the face, who want gradual firming from their own collagen instead of added volume alone. It is also an option for the neck, chest, knees and body, areas where hyaluronic acid filler is not the usual choice.

Who Radiesse Is Not For

Radiesse may not be appropriate for patients who:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Have an active skin infection in the area.
  • Have a known allergy to an ingredient of the product.
  • Have a history of severe allergic reactions.
  • Have a bleeding disorder.

Radiesse is not used in the lips or under the eyes. For those areas, see dermal fillers. Unlike hyaluronic acid filler, Radiesse is not dissolved with hyaluronidase.

Radiesse and Filler in One Plan

Radiesse can be planned together with hyaluronic acid filler, as a multi-layer approach to facial rejuvenation and balancing. Radiesse provides structural support or collagen restoration. Hyaluronic acid filler restores volume, refines proportions and addresses specific areas. In facial balancing, the plan can include filler, Radiesse or both.

What to Expect at the Visit

  1. Medical history and treatment consent are completed.
  2. The area is assessed and the plan is agreed, including the number of syringes.
  3. Radiesse is placed in the selected area.
  4. The plan for any following sessions is reviewed with the patient.

Radiesse or Hyaluronic Acid Filler?

They do different jobs. A hyaluronic acid dermal filler fills sunken areas and adds shape and definition. Radiesse stimulates the body’s own collagen. Fillers are not biostimulators. The article Radiesse vs. Hyaluronic Acid explains the difference in detail. For skin texture and acne scars, see SkinPen microneedling.

When Results Show and How Long They Last

The gel gives some support from the first day. The firming comes later, as the skin builds its own collagen over the following weeks and months. Published follow-up studies describe results lasting about a year or more. It varies with the area, the amount used and the patient.

Downtime and Aftercare

Bruising, redness and swelling in the treated area are expected and are mostly short-term, lasting less than a week.

  • Limit sun and heat on the treated area for 24 hours, or until the swelling and redness have gone down.
  • Keep strenuous activity to a minimum that day, because it can increase swelling.
  • Massage the area only if and how it was instructed at the visit.

Written aftercare instructions are given at the visit. Contact the practice right away about unusual pain, skin that turns white or blotchy, or any change in vision.
