What PRP Is

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. A small sample of the patient’s own blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to separate and concentrate the platelets. That concentrated plasma is then applied to the area being treated. PRP is a liquid: it works on the quality of the skin and does not add volume.

Two Facial PRP Treatments

  • Facial PRP mesotherapy: PRP is placed across the skin of the face with many small, shallow injections.
  • Under-eye PRP: PRP is placed in the thin skin under the eyes.

Who Facial PRP Is For

  • Adults who want to improve the overall quality of the skin of the face: texture, tone and fine lines.
  • Adults concerned about the look of the skin under the eyes who prefer a treatment prepared from their own blood.

Patients whose main concern is a hollow under the eyes may be better suited to a treatment that adds volume, such as PRF Biofiller / Bio Gel or under eye filler.

Who Facial PRP Is Not For

PRP may not be appropriate for patients who:

  • Have a blood or platelet disorder, or take blood thinners.
  • Have an active infection in the area or are ill at the time of the visit.
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Are in active cancer treatment.

Medical history is reviewed before treatment.

What to Expect at the Visit

  1. Medical history and treatment consent are completed.
  2. A small blood sample is drawn and prepared during the visit.
  3. A numbing cream is applied to the skin.
  4. The PRP is placed across the face or under the eyes.
  5. Aftercare instructions are given and the plan is reviewed.

Sessions and Results

Several treatments are generally recommended to get the most from PRP, because the skin responds gradually over the weeks after each session. A single treatment can also be done. The number of sessions and the time between them are defined with each patient.

Downtime and Aftercare

The skin can look red, with mild swelling and small marks at the injection points, for a day or two. Under the eyes, swelling or a bruise can last several days.

  • Keep the skin clean and skip makeup for the rest of the day.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and direct sun for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Use a gentle cleanser and sunscreen while the skin settles.
  • Ask before taking anti-inflammatory medication, because it can interfere with how platelets work.

Written aftercare instructions are given at the visit. Contact the practice about pain, swelling or redness that increases instead of improving.
