SkinPen® Microneedling in Dania Beach, near Fort Lauderdale
SkinPen® microneedling is a treatment with an FDA-cleared device, used to improve acne scars, large pores, rough texture, uneven skin tone, wrinkles and fine lines. At Injection Lab it is performed by Kendally Guardia, PA-C, on its own or combined with PRP or PDRN.
How Microneedling Works
Microneedling uses very fine needles to make tiny, controlled punctures in the surface of the skin. The skin responds by producing new collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep it firm and smooth. Over a series of treatments, this is what improves scars, pores and texture.
What Makes SkinPen Different
SkinPen® is a medical microneedling device, not a home roller. It is FDA-cleared to improve facial acne scars in adults aged 22 and older, in all skin types, and to improve wrinkles of the neck. Each treatment uses a new sterile, single-use needle cartridge, and the depth of the needles is adjusted to the area and the concern being treated.
What SkinPen Treats
- Acne scars
- Large pores
- Rough texture
- Uneven skin tone
- Wrinkles and fine lines
Three Options
- SkinPen® microneedling.
- SkinPen® with PRP: PRP, prepared from the patient’s own blood, is applied to the skin during the treatment.
- SkinPen® with PDRN: a PDRN skin booster, which does not come from the blood, is applied during the treatment.
Who SkinPen Is For
SkinPen is for adults who want to improve acne scars, visible pores, rough or uneven texture, uneven tone or fine lines, and who are looking for a treatment that works on the skin itself and does not add volume. It can be done on the face and the neck.
Who SkinPen Is Not For
SkinPen may not be appropriate for patients who:
- Have active skin cancer, open wounds, sores or irritated skin in the area to be treated.
- Have an active skin infection or a cold sore outbreak in the area.
- Are taking isotretinoin.
- Have a bleeding disorder.
- Have an allergy to stainless steel or to anesthetics.
- Have a history of keloid scars.
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
For SkinPen with PRP, the conditions listed on the PRP page also apply. Medical history is reviewed before treatment.
A Series of Treatments
Collagen builds gradually, so SkinPen is planned as a series. It can be done as a series of 3 treatments, with the face and the neck included. In SkinPen with PRP, the PRP is applied in every treatment of the series.
What to Expect at the Visit
- Medical history and treatment consent are completed.
- The skin is cleansed and a numbing cream is applied.
- The SkinPen is passed over the skin of the area. With PRP or PDRN, the product is applied during the treatment.
- Instructions for skin care after the treatment are given, and the next session is planned.
Microneedling or Another Treatment?
SkinPen treats scars, pores, texture, tone and fine lines. For wrinkles caused by facial movement, see wrinkle relaxer injections. For sunken areas and deep folds, see dermal fillers. For loose, crepey skin, see Radiesse.
Downtime and Aftercare
The skin looks red after the treatment, similar to a mild sunburn, for about a day. Over the next few days it can feel tight or dry and may flake lightly. Patients can generally return to their normal activities within 24 hours.
- For the first day, use only the products recommended at the visit, and skip makeup.
- From the next day, use a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer and a mineral sunscreen.
- Avoid direct sun for at least 3 days.
- Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and swimming pools for 48 hours.
- Pause retinol, acids and exfoliants until the skin no longer feels sensitive.
Written aftercare instructions are given at the visit. In the manufacturer’s clinical study, the treatments were done one month apart.
